What is lick abs?

Lick abs, also known as abdominal lick granuloma or acral lick dermatitis, is a skin condition in dogs characterized by a localized area of skin that the dog repeatedly licks or chews, leading to the development of a raised, thickened, irritated and inflamed lesion.

The exact cause of lick abs is unknown, but boredom, anxiety, stress, and obsessive-compulsive disorders are believed to contribute to the development of the condition. It is also more commonly seen in certain breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers, and Great Danes.

The diagnosis of lick abs is usually made by examining the affected area and ruling out other skin conditions such as allergies and infections. Treatment typically involves addressing the underlying cause of the licking behavior, such as behavior modification, environmental enrichment, and anxiety reduction techniques, in addition to medical treatment, which may include topical or systemic anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics, and corticosteroids.

If left untreated, lick abs can progress and become a chronic and difficult-to-treat condition that can lead to secondary bacterial infections and more widespread skin damage. Therefore, it is important to seek veterinary attention promptly if you suspect your dog has this condition.
